“Shibuya”-style Public Space
The city of “Shibuya” is globally known for its unique attractions around Shibuya Station – the iconic scramble crossing and its urban fabric of vibrant streets and alleys. “Shibuya” also encompasses a variety of unique neighborhoods with an excellent living and natural environments including parks with rich greenery, pedestrian paths, and rivers. The overlaying culture in Shibuya produces distinctive excitement and experiences, attracting a diversity of people.
This indicates that the term “Shibuya” is now more than just a district name. It has transformed into a term that embodies its unique culture, trends, lifestyles, and behaviors, that results in the creation of attractive and new urban experiences.
Therefore, we pledge to redefine “Shibuya” as a term expressing attractive urban experiences.
This competition seeks proposals for public spaces that embody the above-mentioned meaning of “Shibuya”. Specifically, we expect a variety of perspectives and ideas for various “Shibuya”-style urban spaces from around the world – such as proposals of concepts or designs of spaces for enhancing the attraction of cities, as well as proposals for urban activities, social systems, and services the place would generate.
